The 4Cs — Carat, Clarity, Colour, and Cut — are the internationally recognised standards used to evaluate and grade a diamond’s quality. At jewelrysors, every diamond we offer, whether natural or lab-grown, is independently certified by reputable gemological institutions such as the GIA. Each stone is carefully assessed by qualified gemologists, ensuring full transparency and confidence in every detail of your purchase.
Understanding the 4Cs provides a solid foundation when selecting a diamond. Combined with guidance from our expert team, this knowledge helps you choose a stone that truly reflects your style, values, and vision.
Diamond Carat
Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its physical size — though higher carat weights often appear larger to the eye. The term dates back centuries, originating from the use of carob seeds as counterweights due to their consistent mass.
While carat weight plays an important role, it is only one part of a diamond’s beauty. Cut quality, proportions, and craftsmanship significantly influence how large and brilliant a diamond appears. A well-cut stone can appear larger and sparkle more intensely than a heavier diamond cut with less precision.
Diamond Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of natural inclusions or surface characteristics within a diamond. At jewelrysors, clarity grades typically range from Flawless to Slightly Included, depending on the visibility, size, and location of these features.
Each diamond is evaluated for internal inclusions and external blemishes, as well as how they affect the stone’s overall appearance. Many inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, allowing diamonds with slightly lower clarity grades to still appear exceptionally beautiful.
Diamond Colour
A diamond at its purest form appears completely colourless. Diamond colour grading begins at D, representing exceptional whiteness, and progresses alphabetically to stones with increasingly noticeable warmth.
Colour has a direct influence on a diamond’s value — the less colour present, the rarer and more valuable the stone. Our team is always happy to guide you through colour options, helping you balance brilliance, beauty, and budget to find the perfect match.
Diamond Cut
Cut is often considered the most important of the 4Cs. It refers not to the diamond’s shape, but to how skillfully it has been crafted to reflect light.
A masterfully cut diamond is designed with precise proportions — including table size, depth, crown angle, and girdle thickness — to maximise brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Cut quality also impacts durability and longevity, making it a critical factor in both beauty and performance.
